INTRODUCTION TO TAPESTRY WEAVING

In this series students will learn the basic techniques of tapestry weaving, designing for tapestry, and creating their own first piece.

About the artist: Margo Macdonald has exhibited tapestry and paintings throughout the Northwest for the past thirty years and is represented in public collections throughout the United States.

ART AROUND THE WORLD CAMP

June 24-27, 9:00am-1:00pm, Sehmel Homestead Park 10123 78th Ave NW

Children ages 6-12 are invited to join TWAA instructor Adria Hanson to learn about Art History around the world. Learn about Greek pottery, Egyptian cartouche, Chinese dragon eyes and Roman mosaics. The students will come home with their own pieces of art to display.

AUGUST 2019

ART OF THE IMPRESSIONISTS

August 6-9, 10:00am-2:00pm, Tacoma DeMolay Sand Spit Nature Preserve, Bella Bella Drive, Fox Island

Young artists will get inspired when they go Van Gogh! Try your hand at impressionist painting by getting inspired by the works of Van Gogh and Monet. Use acrylics on canvas and enjoy plein air painting. Class is open to ages 6-12.

PLEIN AIR TEEN CAMP

August 19-22, 10:00am-2:00pm, Tacoma DeMolay Sand Spit Nature Preserve, Bella Bella Drive, Fox Island

Students ages 12-17 will experience plein air painting with watercolor, watercolor paper, and acrylic mediums plus pencils and erasers. Students will create clay creatures and study life on the beach. We will also create a beautiful scene using tin toiling.

TOONIVERSITY ART CAMP

August 12-15, 10:00am-2:00pm, Sehmel Homestead Park 10123 78th Ave NW

Fans of comic books and cartoons unite! This class introduces artists to the basics of comic and cartoon creation. Learn how to create muscle tone, action, speech bubbles, city and landscapes with vivid color and more all while creating your very own comic book. Class is open to students age 13-18

MAY 2019

PAINTING SELF-PORTRAITS (INTERGENERATIONAL)

Tuesday, May 7, 14 (ages 4-10) & May 21, 28 (ages 11-15) 1:00pm-2:00pm, The Mustard Seed Project,  9016 154th Ave Ct NW

Inviting local adults to join kids from the Key Peninsula Homeschoolers Co-Op for a multi-generational art class where we will explore painting self-portraits in acrylic on masonite boards. This is a 2-part, multi-generational class.

Classes 1 – 2: May 7 + 14 (ages 4-10)
Classes 3 – 4: May 21 + 28 (ages 11-15)

COMIC / ILLUSTRATION BOOK ART 

May 1 – June 5, 5:00-6:30pm, Sehmel Homestead Park,10123 78th Ave NW.

In collaboration with Pen Met Parks, TWAA will be teaching a 6 week class for children ages 13-17 at Sehmel Park called “Tooniversity”.

ECO PRINT I: ECO PRINT BASICS SILK SCARF

Wednesday May 8, 9:00am-3:30pm, Sand Dollar Beach, Gig Harbor, WA- Directions provided at sign-up

In collaboration with The Tacoma Weaver’s Guild, TWAA offers a class in Print Basics for Silk Scarves. In this workshop, we will do some test pieces and then make a final take-home scarf on silk and a table runner of silk noil (raw silk). Each student will be making test samples for themselves and the group to share, so that in the end, each student will go home with 20 (!) test samples covering different processes and two eco-printed pieces.

$125 per student,includes class fee + $25 materials fee + $1.98 sales tax. All fees are due when you register.

ECO PRINT II: INDIGO AND ECO PRINTING

Saturday May 11, 9:00am-5:00pm, Sand Dollar Beach, Gig Harbor, WA- Directions provided at sign-up

Indigo and Eco Print will build on what you learned in Eco Print I. Indigo is a substantive dye, not requiring mordants to get permanent coloring. We have seen that our best eco-prints come on mordanted fabrics. How then do we also eco-print indigo fabrics? In this eight-hour workshop you will learn:

  1. How to set up your own indigo vat (Michelle Garcia methods).
  2. Indigo dyeing on cellulose fabric
  3. Test different methods of eco printing on indigo, go home with multiple test pieces.
  4. Make a final beautiful woven shawl project and eco print your own T-shirt.

$147 per student,includes class fee + $25 materials fee + $1.98 sales tax. A $50 deposit must be received by March 15; balance due May 1, 2019

About the artist: Adria Hanson paints portraits and local landscapes in her art studio, is an outreach art teacher for public schools, and is the Vice President of Two Waters Arts Alliance.

Patty Finnigan graduated from the Art Institute of Seattle, established independent art licensing business; develop new printing process and create a top-selling design in the company’s history. She is now currently an art workshop at structure at TCC. Patty’s class is focus on paper sculpture alcohol inks and watercolor painting.

$10 Fee/Per Adult (includes materials). Class is for adults age 55+. To register: 253-884-9814.

DRAGONFLY CREATIONS

Saturday April 13, 10:00am-1:00pm, Sehmel Homestead Park,10123 78th Ave NW.

In collaboration with Pen Met Parks, TWAA will be teaching a class for children ages 6-12 at Sehmel Park on Dragonfly Creations. Dr. Phyllis Ellermeier and Adria Hanson will be teaching.

EGG DECORATING

In partnership with The Mustard Seed Project, this 3-part series will teach the basic techniques of Egg Decorating. Taught by Tanja McMurray, a local farmer who likes to use home grown or recycled products to craft with.

OCTOBER 2018

MAKE YOUR OWN UNIQUE COLLAGE 

Thursday Oct. 18, 1:30-3:00pm, Crandall Center, 9016 154th Ave Ct NW.

Students will create amazing works of art with meaningful expressions under the guidance of an artistic wordsmith and will get to see the range of art materials beyond multimedia. Instructor Dr. Phyllis Ellermeier is an inventive artist who grasps the knowledge of shape, color, and texture. Mixed media and spray paint are her go-to mediums.

DRAGONFLIES ART CLASS

Class Dates: Oct 9 or 16 (with children ages 4-10) and Oct 23 or 30 (with children ages 11-15)

Limited Space for Adults! Inviting local older adults to join kids from the Key Peninsula Homeschoolers Co-Op for a “Dragonflies” art class where you will create a take home dragonfly made of paper and wire. AUGUST 2018

Saturday August 11, 4-6 pm: Kids’ Art Jam at the Key Peninsula Civic Center! For kids 9-15 yrs old.

Tickets hereJoin us at Blend in Key Center at 6pm on August 8th for a teaching artist informational. Artists interested in teaching children and adults are welcome to come and learn what TWAA offers our community. Meeting will be on the back patio if weather is nice.

JULY 2018

Saturday July 28th, 4-6 pm: Kids’ Art Jam at the Key Peninsula Civic Center! For kids 9-15 yrs old. This months Kids’ Art Jam is about music and pets. We will have a couple of guitars and a drum to draw and for music making after class! You are also welcome to bring another instrument to draw or paint. Will have canvases and drawing paper on site. Bring  a favorite pet photo. Kids can draw their favorite pet instead. It’s always about having fun with art!  And this time, maybe a little jam session too. Supplies included in fee. Snacks provided by Calloway cupcake kitchen. Register here.

MAY 2018

Homeschool Art at the Key Center Library: Friday May 4th & 11th, 1-2pm (older ages 11-15.) Monday May 14th and 21st, 1-2 pm (younger ages 4-10.) Adria Hanson will be teaching children’s portraits. These will be children’s own creations for the Key Center Corral Mural. Saturday May 19th: The Sonic String Quartet is coming to the Key Peninsula Civic Center! Doors will open at 7, concert begins at 8 pm. It will be a wonderful evening with no host bar and music from Mozart, Beethoven, the Beatles, Macklemore and more! Tickets: $20 in advance at Blend Wine Shop or Sunnycrest Nursery, $25 at the door.
