A designated coast guard artist and avid sailor, Steve Mapel grew up in Southern Oregon, one of the most rugged and remote areas in the state.
Living in that wilderness area helped form his love of the outdoors, which influences his art on an ongoing basis.
Both his mother and grandmother were accomplished oil painters. His grandfather worked in concrete and wood, and his father was a metal and wood sculpture. Primarily he works in oils, and he also enjoys bronze sculpture.
